Cricket Australia’s changes to junior cricket are starting to be implemented this season

Cricket Australia is rolling out changes across Australia to the age groups and formats of junior cricket. Canterbury & Western Suburbs Cricket Association has made these changes to our age groups and formats as directed by Cricket Australia. CWSCA had already made format changes in recent years which fit in with the changes Cricket Australia wants so in the lower age groups the changes are not so big for our Association as they may be for other associations across the country.

In the Juniors, our old age groups of U9s, U10s, U12s, U14s and U16s will change to the Cricket Australia formats of Stage 1 (7, 8 & 9 year olds) U11s, U13s & U15s. Though the new Cricket Australia Pathway stops at U15s, CWSCA in association with St George are planning an U17s competition for those 15 year old players who would otherwise miss out on what they were expecting to be another year of playing cricket. 16 year olds will also be able to play in this U17s competition.

Summer Hill CC will also be fielding two age groups in the Girls Thunder League, and the T20 Blast for Girls, which are not changing from the age groups and formats we had last season.

Summer Hill CC will again be conducting Milo In2Cricket sessions this summer for 4 to 7 year olds which will continue with the same format it has been using since it was introduced.

In season 2017-2018 Summer Hill CC will be fielding the following age groups and divisions.

Stage 1 – Cricket Australia’s Junior Format Stage 1 for 7, 8 & 9 year olds – this combines what was formally our U9s & U10s. Last years U9s players will be playing in Stage 1 this season unless there are compelling reasons to permit them to play up in the U11s as determined by Summer Hill CC’s playing age policy which is available here.

U11 - Div 1 & Div 2 depending on team numbers

U13 - Div 1 and Div 2.  Div 1 combined with St George, with the possibility of combining Div 2 with St George depending on CWSCA team numbers.

U15 - Div 1 and Div 2.  Div 1 combined with St George, with the possibility of combining Div 2 with St George depending on CWSCA team numbers

U17 Division 2 - combined with St George playing on Saturday morning. We expect the Div 2 to be mainly 15 year olds but there is also space for 16 year olds who are not Rep level players.

Summer Hill CC will be using the following formats for the season 2017-18

Stage 1 (7,8 & 9 year olds)

Adopting the Cricket Australia Junior Format Stage 1 to incorporate entry level players (this is a combination of our previous formats U9 & U10).

  • 20 overs per team.  17 deliveries per batter.
  • Pitch length 16m.  Bowling from one end.
  • Modified smaller ball - approx. 100g Kooka Supa Soft ball.
  • 7 players per team (squads can be bigger than this but max of 7 players fielding at any one time and max 7 bowlers and batters but it doesn’t have to be the same 7 bowling and batting).
  • 40m boundaries measured from batters stumps on grounds where this is possible. On some grounds like Darrel Jackson Gardens, the design of the ground will not allow this so we will just use the ground as it is. 40 metres is a long way behind the stumps but going forward from the stumps it is not as far from the other end of the pitch as the old 25metre boundary measured from each stump end.
  • New type of scorebook to make scoring these rules easier.
  • Max 6 balls per over. All players to bowl – 3 to bowl 4 overs each week and this be rotated each week– others to bowl 2 or 3 overs.
  • No fielders within 15 metres of batter or each other (except wicket keeper) to encourage singles and safety
  • Unlimited dismissals (each player will face the nominated number of balls each)
  • 4 runs per wicket will be added to the opposition total at the end of the innings.

Stage 1 objectives

  • Hit moving ball on two sides of field
  • Run between wickets with judgment and calling
  • Bowl over 16m with straight arm within batter’s reach
  • Catch and throw >20 m
  • Can perform tasks when asked at training and during the game
  • Basic self-awareness and respect for others
  • Participates in all activities at training
  • Eats before training/game and brings drink bottle to training and on game days
  • Engages positively at training and on game day
  • Wears appropriate clothing and footwear to training

U11s Div1.

  • 20 overs each innings. 17 deliveries per batter.
  • Pitch length 18m.  Bowling from one end.

  • 40m boundaries measured from batters stumps.
  • All players to bowl – 3 to bowl 4 overs each week and this be rotated each week– others to bowl 2 or 3 overs.
