Spin King Monty Panesar to coach Summer Hill players
Next two sessions All sessions will be held at: Summary of first spin session with Monty PanessarFrom Glenn Holdstock
Thanks Chris for organising the specialist Spin Bowling coaching sessions with International Test Cricketer Monty Panesar. Players from the under 14s through to senior players had the benefit of Monty's experience in Session One on Wednesday at Blick. What did Monty do? Well, he didn’t bowl a ball! Instead he worked with many of our players on how THEY can improve their performance. Monty's process:
Then he took the bowlers, in groups of 4 or 5 to the rolled pitch area at the eastern edge of the field (you know it). Assessing the players again, he gave EACH bowler, individually, just one or two points to lift their spin bowling effectiveness. Monty talked about the importance of length, bowling to still hit the wicket, putting the batter under pressure, getting the batter to drive (hopefully in the air) by landing the ball on or just slightly short of the good length. The players responded really well, and we could see a marked improvement in each player’s performance. Coaches and Managers should get feedback on the session from these players. Monty will return to this group in a few weeks to see how things went in their matches, and work to make fine adjustments. Next session is with the younger age group, where we can lay foundations for great spin bowlers for SHCC future attacks. Get there if you can, because Monty is a very good coach who relates exceptionally well with the junior players.
Next sessions with Monty Panesar Session Two. The next Spin Session with Monty is: Friday, November 4, Blick Oval, 5pm – 6:30pm: under 10s to under 13s. Session Three. The final advanced Spin Session with Monty will be held on: Friday, November 11, Blick Oval, 5pm – 6:30pm: advanced spinners Please bear in mind, these sessions are for spin bowlers, although some batters will also be required in the nets. To the other players and coaches who usually train on those days: thank you for understanding as we will need the nets and practice pitch (though not necessarily at the same time). It would be appreciated if those who aren’t involved in the Spin Sessions can use the western side of the oval while the sessions are on. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we want to grasp with both hands. |
