Summary of first spin session with Monty Panesar
From Glenn Holdstock
SHCC Club Coach

Thanks Chris for organising the specialist Spin Bowling coaching sessions with International Test Cricketer Monty Panesar. Players from the under 14s through to senior players had the benefit of Monty's experience in Session One on Wednesday at Blick.

What did Monty do? Well, he didn’t bowl a ball!

Instead he worked with many of our players on how THEY can improve their performance.

Monty's process:

He had the spinner bowl to batsman in the nets, assessing their style, looking for strengths and deficiencies of each bowler.
Monty also had the batsman work on forcing singles from the bowlers, to see how the bowlers reacted under pressure.
He emphasised that batters should look to look for runs, turn the strike over, and keep the ball on the ground!! (Spinners get most wickets CAUGHT OUT... great coaching point )
Then he took the bowlers, in groups of 4 or 5 to the rolled pitch area at the eastern edge of the field (you know it).  Assessing the players again, he gave EACH bowler, individually,  just one or two points to lift their spin bowling effectiveness.

Monty talked about the importance of length, bowling to still hit the wicket, putting the batter under pressure, getting the batter to drive (hopefully in the air) by landing the ball on or just slightly short of the good length.

The players responded really well, and we could see a marked improvement in each player’s performance.

Monty is a very good coach who relates exceptionally well with the junior players.
