SHCC U13 Girls 0/33 defeated Leichhardt Wanderers Black 5/32

The SHCC U13 Girls had the honour of being the last team in the club to kick off their season, after a bye in round one. The girls were all fired up and ready to go, arriving at their new home ground Easton Park hoping to bowl first. They got their wish when their opponents Leichhardt won the toss and chose to bat. There was a buzz in the air as the SHCC girls took the field, ready for a big game.

Eva opened the bowling and the batters immediately looked unsure and were unable to get bat on ball during the over. Captain Amali took the second over with her express pace deliveries and bowled a sensational maiden.

The first breakthrough came in the sixth over when Alex got one of Leichhardt’s best batters swinging wildly at her legspin, popping a ball straight up in the air. Alex ran in to take a great catch and the team celebrated.

Leichhardt’s first runs from the bat didn’t come until the eighth over - so strong was the Summer Hill bowling. While the batters did well to weather the storm, they were unable to make contact with most deliveries, or pierce the field when they did make contact. Elin’s consistency caused trouble for the batters all day, as did Tilly’s pace and seam presentation. Kyah bowled a great line and length to ensure Leichhardt couldn’t score quickly.

The second wicket came after drinks, with Florence - in her debut match for SHCC - removing the stumps on the final ball of the over with a pinpoint accurate delivery. The very next ball, Pia followed it up by coming around the wicket to the left hander and clipping off stump with a legspin delivery that turned beautifully.

A couple of overs later Alex took another great wicket, getting great flight and dip to sail under the bat and take the bails. Chelsie bowled a perfect inswinging delivery next over to send another batter on her way with the stumps in disarray.

Throughout the whole bowling innings, the team benefitted hugely from Tala’s presence behind the stumps in wicket keeper. She kept the pressure on the batters by denying opportunities for byes and runs from edges, stopping everything that came her way.

Leichhardt finished their innings 5/31 and Summer Hill was full of energy as they went in to bat. Kyah - in her 50th match for SHCC - and Florence opened the batting and immediately got off to a flyer, running three on the first delivery. Both batters scored singles with ease to turn over the strike, as well as finding the boundary regularly. Kyah retired to bring Amali to the crease and she finished things off, smashing two fours in quick succession. All three batters finished on 10* and completed the chase in 3.5 overs.

In a great display of spirit, the two teams agreed to continue the game to give everyone a chance to bowl and bat. The Summer Hill girls also took turns fielding for Leichhardt, who were short a player, and did so with their typical enthusiasm, even when the result was still on the line.

Congratulations to the team for a fantastic win to start the season and a game played in great spirit.

Alex was the well deserved Andiamo Player of the Match for this round, finishing with bowling figures of 2/2 from three overs and a catch. She was also a strong presence in the field, cutting off singles and encouraging her teammates.
