SHCC U15s win in close encounter

With the rain making Lees Park unplayable, this match was moved to Henley Park with the proviso that the game was reduced to 25 overs a side to ensure it finished in time for the seniors match happening afterwards. Any game is better than no game, so all the U15s made the switch and prepared for the second round game against Lakemba (LCC).

Match report by Renee Geelen & Fergus Daly

Summer Hill (7/77) defeated LCC U15 Gold (8/73)

Lakemba (LCC) batted first and made a slow and steady start with the first wicket coming in the third over at 1/8 (caught Kaspar, bowled Henry). They had a good partnership after that, building nicely until the next wicket came at 2/33 (bowled Nick) with the next falling soon after at 3/37 (bowled Nick).

In the over before drinks, Raph came on to bowl. The batter slogged the ball to mid-wicket directly into the palms of Fergus who held onto the catch. 4/44 (caught Fergus, bowled Raph). The next ball was a replay of the one before – a simple catch popped to mid-wicket with Fergus catching it again, 5/44 (caught Fergus, bowled Raph). With Raph on a hat-trick, Lakemba blocked out the hat-trick ball and made it to drinks on 5/44.

The over after drinks saw one more wicket (caught Henry, bowled Alessandro), and then Lakemba built nicely to finish their 25 overs on 8/73 with the two other wickets being bowled Dara, caught Henry, and bowled Dara.

With a chasable score on the board, SHCC stepped out with some confidence. This was quickly marred with a maiden over, followed by a wicket maiden. Another wicket fell in the third over, taking the score to 2/2. The fourth over was the most successful in the match until that point with four runs, and then another maiden, before the third wicket fell in the sixth over. The fourth wicket and fifth wickets fell in the eighth over, and SHCC looked to be in desperate trouble at 5/9.

Thankfully Alvin and Manula stepped up with a 49 run partnership which was only broken in the 21st over when Alvin was unfortunately run out while attempting a second run. With Manula out caught in the next over, the game was suddenly tight again at 7/62 with two new batters at the crease.

Henry and Nick held on strong, putting on the final ten runs to draw the match, before Henry smashed a four to bring home a win from an implausible position.
