For our first official game, the U9 Blues were greeted by a chilly, windy morning at the otherwise picturesque Darrell Jackson Gardens. Under the captaincy of Sebastian, the team won the flip and elected to bat. Our game plan was simple: try our best, support each other and have fun. Oh, and no hands in pockets!

Match report by Sean Richardson

SHCC U9 Blue 212 def Marrickville U9 Crawford 81

Hamish and Sebastian opened the batting, and the 4s flowed thick and fast early. Darcy and Jacob followed with some great running between wickets, while Billy brought strong defence against some tight Marrickville bowling. Not to be outdone, Lachie and Coby rounded out the batting with excellent calling. SHCC ended up with 185 off the bat, with everyone scoring at least one boundary… a very impressive team effort!

As soon as we started bowling, it was clear the pre-season “Ready to Play” sessions were worthwhile. There are almost too many highlights to mention, including: Hamish’s stumping off Darcy’s second over (the first stumping I’ve seen in Stage 1 cricket); Coby’s caught and bowled; Lachie’s screamer behind the stumps as wickie; and stump rattlers from Billy, Jacob, Lachlan and Sebastian. In fact, every bowler got a wicket, plus we snagged a couple of run outs - restricting Marrickville to just 72 off the bat in reply.

All in all, it was a fantastic result from the team - but it had nothing to do with the scoreboard. Instead, it was the positive, supportive and committed team performance from EVERY player.

Thank you to all the parents and supporters who helped marshall the players and cheered on the team. It makes a big difference. A special shout out to Tristan our scorer and Hannah on oranges!

Finally: an extra congratulations goes to Billy, who was SHCC Player of the Round! Billy attended his first training session on Friday night, having never picked a bat nor bowled a ball. While a little nervous, Billy’s hard work was rewarded with 7 runs off the bat and a wicket in his second over! Well done Billy, great to have you on our team.
