SHCC Scoop - A Morning Win, 100 and 5 for

Cricket is an even better game when you are winning – we all love being outside on a Saturday, spending time with our mates and playing the game we love – but is just that little bit better when you get to celebrate a win. A very big congratulations to our Morning 3rd Div Team for their first win of the season – and what a way to do with James Hoy celebrating another Century.

After domination by the bowlers, this weeks winner was easy to pick with a century no less for James, no doubt a key reason for his teams breakthrough win for the season. Well done James.

Round 6 SHCC 8/152 Won
v Rangers 148
In our 3rd season in 5th Division, the Blue’s thought they had things all figured out. Narrowly missing finals last year with more wins than losses, we had high expectations for this season – and, of course, Saturday arvo would be the highlight of all of our weeks. Things hadn’t quite gone to plan so far, with just the 1 win (against a team who looked a lot like us 5 years ago – and have now been regraded to Div 7), we needed to change something.
Luca and Lachie spoke during the week. They agreed, let’s not worry about the result – we are here to have fun, and not take ourselves too seriously. Luca gathered us for a pre-match team talk, and asked us all to find the fun in what was about to happen over the next 2 Saturday arvo’s.
Well, what happened was our best performance of the season, against a quality team in Rangers. We didn’t have it all our own way, but the way we reacted to challenging situations showed Luca’s message had gotten through.
Asher’s opening spell set things up, removing a dangerous opener LBW. He copped a bit of stick, as did Luca – but both took it in their stride and kept on playing. Lachie had a masterstroke suggesting Robin Joshi, new to SHCC, have a bowl. He might do some damage – and damage he did, taking 2 key wickets to his own surprise – and Rayhan’s, after he pulled in a stunning catch at mid wicket.
Sergio kept things tight, and Owen and Rayhan held down an end with some quality left arm spin. Wickets had fallen steadily, and after a burst of runs at the start of the innings, we had managed the run rate very well.
Australia has a famous left arm over bowler known as “The Mop”. 5th Div Blue also have one, with Leo Tarbox taking 3 much needed wickets – and fittingly the last one with a catch to Lachie in the deep – his best catch for the Club so far. Rangers all out for 148 in 42 overs. A great effort in the field, and we all walked off, having enjoyed our afternoon so far.
With just under an hours play remaining, we had some batting to negotiate. Leo wasn’t available next week, so he offered to open, and Lachie did the same. Leo played 2 amazing shots for his 8 – perfectly timed cover drives for 4 – and if you want to see more of Leo’s perfect timing, Leo is Musical Director of Shrek The Musical, which closes this weekend – check it out here:
Lachie also fell just before stumps, leaving SHCC 2/31 – but with plenty of overs to score the runs.
Day 2 came, and rain threatened. Run rate was on our mind, but we needn’t get too far ahead of ourselves – play positive cricket, find the fun and we should be OK – but find the fun first.
Andrew enjoyed the promotion, making a quality 29, punishing the bad balls, and defending the good ones. That would be the order of the day for us. Rayhan and Luca both made good contributions, with scores in the teens, but we were teetering. The old married couple, Phil and Jud, found themselves together at the crease at 6/84 – still 65 runs to get, but heaps of time. The grass was long, the bowling accurate and we would have to grind it out.
What came next wasn’t pretty or to be found in any text books – however, the Aussie Men’s Test Team may have found our application useful on Day 5 at Newlands. A 7th wicket partnership of 55 was almost perfect, taking us to within 10 of victory. Simon fell to a quality ball from the last ball of another flawless Manzoor Khan over – that’s all he knows how to bowl – and we had 2 wickets remaining and 8 runs needed. We would need to manage who faced Manzoor very carefully. But we had 6 balls to worry about before then.
Thankfully it didn’t come to that, with Phil hitting the fist 2 balls of the next over for 4 to secure the win.
Pressure can do funny things to you – our team has felt that all season. After an afternoon of consistent, quality bowling, the effects of pressure were apparent. Two loose, short balls down leg side. It was relief for us, and disappointment for Rangers.
Regardless of the result, 5th Blue found our way – standout performances from Robin and Leo with the ball, everyone in the field – our batters chipping in, and Phil and Jud who patiently got us close enough to the finish line, where pressure did the rest.

Match Report: Dharmin Thakkar
Round 6: SHCC 9/84 Lost
v Panania East Hills RSL 9/171 & 6/127
Day 1
After winning the toss, we elected to bowl first, opening the attack with Dharmin, Aman and Tej. The opposition got off to a steady start, with their in-form batter A. McGuire showing plenty of resistance. It took until the 13th over to break through, with Gourav emerging as the dark horse of the day, dismissing McGuire and following it up with another two wickets in an impressive 10-over spell.
Aman then took charge of cleaning up the lower order, ensuring we restricted the opposition to a manageable total of 171 runs.
However, our reply got off to the worst possible start. We lost two crucial wickets, Hamza and Aman, without scoring a single run, leaving us in an early crisis. Following the setback, Jeet and Gourav showed resilience and attempted to rebuild the innings, providing some stability towards the end of Day 1.
Day 2
Unfortunately, we lost Gourav early on Day 2, putting further pressure on the batting lineup. Prabhu then provided some much-needed momentum with a flurry of boundaries, while Shaik offered support at the other end, building a promising partnership.
However, just as we looked to regain some control, both Prabhu and Shaik fell in quick succession. This triggered another collapse, with three more wickets falling rapidly.
Dharmin showed determination and tried to hold the innings together, but with partners running out at the other end, he eventually fell as well. We were ultimately bowled out for just 84 runs, falling well short of the target of 172.
Despite the disappointing batting performance, the team returned to the field for the opposition's second innings with renewed energy and determination.
Chetan Kondur produced his best spell of the season, dismissing their in-form batter and picking up another wicket to finish with impressive figures of 3/12.
One of the standout moments of his spell was an incredible low catch taken by Gourav, demonstrating excellent commitment and sharpness in the field.
Prabhu and Hamza also chipped in with a wicket each, keeping the pressure on the opposition. The bowling unit continued to fight hard, claiming six wickets in the second innings and securing 2 valuable competition points for the team.

Round 6: SHCC 156 & 8/89 Lost
v Rangers 6/162d
Rangers won the toss and elected to bowl, sending SHCC in to bat on the opening day.
SHCC’s total of 156 was built around a solid half-century from Adam Roberts, whose 59 anchored the innings. Matthew Potter contributed 22, while Patrick Hargreaves made an aggressive start, taking the attack to the bowlers before his promising innings was unfortunately cut short on 21.
Despite these contributions, SHCC struggled to build the partnerships needed to amass enough runs to exert significant pressure on the opposition.
Rangers’ reply was met with some excellent bowling, led by Alex Johnson, whose outstanding spell of 3/25 from 10 overs was a highlight of the match. Bowling with relentless accuracy and genuine menace, Alex tested the batsmen with virtually every delivery, his two maidens reflecting the sustained pressure he applied.
Jimmy Bandas complemented Alex’s aggression with his customary guile and wily local knowledge of the Lees Park wicket. His 13-over spell yielded two wickets, as he cleverly exploited the conditions and kept the batsmen guessing.
David Ward was exceptionally economical, conceding just three runs from four overs, while Patrick Hargreaves also claimed a wicket.
Despite the sustained pressure, Rangers reached 162/6 before declaring, securing first-innings points.
With the first-innings result decided, attention turned to the valuable second-innings bonus points. SHCC again found runs difficult to come by, although David Ward provided some entertaining resistance with a determined 38, including six boundaries. Gil Southwood remained unbeaten on nine as SHCC finished at 89/8 from 21 overs.
Importantly, SHCC passed the 75-run threshold to collect a batting bonus point, while Rangers earned two bowling bonus points for taking at least six wickets.
While well beaten on first innings, the scorecard doesn’t tell the full story. Rangers were forced into an extremely defensive approach against a bowling attack that threatened throughout. We remained confident that breaking one stubborn partnership could expose their tail and give us the opportunity to put them under some serious pressure.
A couple of crucial dropped catches and the occasional turn out of the rough went against us at key moments. Those were the breaks we needed, and on another day the contest might have taken a very different course.
Adam’s solid half-century, Patrick’s aggressive intent, Alex’s outstanding bowling and Jimmy’s clever use of local conditions were all encouraging signs. The talent and determination are there. We just need a few more things to fall our way, and we’ll start turning those promising performances into results.

Pat Cullen and Matt Abotomey
Round 6: SHCC 9/169 Lost
v Marrickville Bears 9/253
DAY 1 - Pat Cullen
This, my friends, was an exceptionally frustrating game. Psychologists note that frustration is not proof that you are bad at learning; it is a signal that your brain is actively adapting, making mistakes, and rewiring itself. In our case there were 11 blokes out in the heat, having our brains rewired and maybe lightly fried in the process. Hopefully, like any good leftovers dish, next time we pull it out of the tupperware, the flavours should meld a little better and we can apply a few lessons learned the hard way.
We lost the toss, but got our ideal result - bowling first. Tempe Recreation Reserve is on the river, right at the end of the airport runway. Sandy underfoot, dead grass, a wide deck and some strange field dimensions led us to one thought - there are runs out here; gotta make inroads early! Your humble author got that ball rolling with a classic inswinger through the gate, bowling the opening bat in the second over for four, and the 7's were cock-a-hoop! Don had done some opposition research and found the Bears batting is top-heavy, get out the top 3 and we're in the game. A good start!
From there, the second wicket put on a 75-run stand, taking a particular liking to Ben Kimble and PJ early. Don, needed to turn the tide, and thought, 'y'know what everyone hates? The slowest possible bowling,' 'Commissioner' Gordon, was happy to oblige, firstly hitting the juniors' crease and sending one underground to take out middle stump. Before Michael Metry turned into prime MS Dhoni for a sharp stumping, his first of two for the day! Through the middle overs Benny '& Eggs' Kimble made a strong return with an excellent caught and bowled, before once again bowling a bloke through the gate. At 6-123 we had the top order in the sheds, and the club for a cold one on our minds.
Jordyn Cubban had other ideas. Coming in at 7 he hit a rear guard 55* that was half of the source of our frustration. Fortunately, at the other end, Adam Miles was getting poles. A clear LBW went our way, and a sensational catch to 'Commissioner' Gordon at cover, hand of god, Diego Maradonna stuff! Absolutely belted off the pads, he stuck a mitt out and plucked it from the sky! Neil then returned to grab his fourth, another sharp stumping to Metry. Enter Sarhan Saeed at 9-181. If this guy was a number 11, I am the pope. He bloody square drove me for four, then pulled me the other side! Every time we moved a fielder, he hit it to where they just left. At the other end Cubban went the long handle, in the heat and after a long day in the field, the wheels fell off for the 7's as they took 70 runs off our last 10 overs, including 50 off the last five to drive the score up to 253 for nine.
A definite opportunity lost for the 7's but lots of important lessons learned. We made some mistakes, particularly at the end and have definitely learned from them. Some real positives too, Neil was sensational with the ball, Pat and Adam kept things really tight and brought wickets through constant pressure; through the middle, Ben came back strong, some excellent work and sharp catches in the field too. Next time we get the chance for a new rock though, you best believe we're taking it! Will we make the runs?
Day 2 - Matt Abotomey
Let's be clear: none of ours had prayed for rain, but the rain was coming regardless. Then there was the run chase. While not a Revenant-style mauling, the Marrickville Bears had definitely gotten the claws out in their last ten overs of batting the week before, leaving us with a total of 253 to chase. With predictions firming that the ringfield of nimbi hovering over Tempe Reserve would drop its payload at 5PM, the challenge was to bat long while keeping the run-rate competitive. Alas, the Bears had also smelt the rain and sought to drag a few salmon out of the rapids before being forced into early hibernation.
From the first ball, the going looked tough. But from square of the wicket, it was difficult to appreciate just how much movement the bowling attack were extracting from the gusty, overcast conditions. Opener Mike Anderson was the first scalp, caught for 7 in the 7th over, although he faced another stern spell later in the arvo when his team-mates discovered he'd randomised the batting order of his juniors team that morning. Kaustav Gupta was the next to go for the same score as his counterpart, filthy at being run out until consolation arrived in the form of an HSP deep in the second session.
Don Stewart took a few clumps of fur off the first change bowlers with a battling 23. The grizzlies dismembered yours truly for single figures and Michael Metry departed the very next over. 5/83 with 33 overs remaining.
Down the other end of the pitch, it was a very different story. Adam Miles, superb in defence and rabid in attack, was in the mood to wrestle these Bears. And with the arrival of Josh Raphael, he found a partner he could counter-punch with. For the whole of the second session, these two had the Marrickvillians dancing on a hotplate. They put on a 69-run partnership, replete with good leaves, clean running and measured shots. When Raphael departed early in the third session for 29 and Miles shortly after, bowled for 68, they both left the crease with season-best scores.
But there was still work to be done, a follow-on to be avoided. Neil Gordon was LBW without score (retribution for the 4 of theirs he bundled out cheaply the week before, no doubt). PJ Rosenberger's tidy prodding infuriated a bowling attack that refused to flag and Oscar Bryant, fresh from tangling with the bowling machine at training on Thursday was unflappable in defence. When PJ was caught behind for 9, fat drops were already falling. The final bat in our shed, Anthony Reed, contributed only a walk to the middle before play was called for the afternoon.
Summer Hill may have ended the day with 9/169 and a technical loss on run rate. But, having managed to smash the beehive open early, I think it's fair to say the Bears found the honey far less forthcoming than they'd hoped.

SMCA Morning 3rd Div
Round 2 SHCC 5/262 Won
v CBRCC 9/138
We won a match! For those who have been following the trials and tribulations of the Summer Hill morning squad you will know that it has been a long time between drinks for us. We went into our second match of the season against the new side of Coogee Bay. Yes, jokes were made about the ice cream. Shaun, after a season of injury has returned to the captaincy and won the toss and chose to bat.

Day 1 started with our new recruit Don and veteran David I opening for us. David I fell early, however Don was in fine form and scored 53 to set up a 70 run partnership with James. As the day progressed our confidence grew as James was unstoppable. With Josh at the other end they put on a 67 run partnership until Joshua was bowled at 15. As the sun continued to climb and only 8 overs left in the day Tushar made a quick 45* with James finishing on 108*. For the first time in a long time we felt quietly confident, finishing with 5/262.
Day 2 arrived with a spring in our step. Scott and David BM opened the bowling on a pitch that delivered very little and opening batters that delivered even less. After 7 overs Coogee finally broke into double figures. Things remained quiet until with the first wicket falling just before drinks from a stumping by Josh off Tushar’s bowling. After that it was all downhill for Coogee. Shuan made an unbelievable bowler run out, and then a clean bowled first ball back after drinks. From there, Prince cleaned up the tail, getting himself a Five for.
