SHCC Scoop - Hat Trick Alert! Aman does it again

9 min read

If you can believe it, Aman Gill from 5th Div Gold has managed to pull off one of cricket’s hardest achievements, a Hat Trick. And this is not his first. He now has 2 Hat Tricks for SHCC.  Sadly, it came against our 5th Div Blue team – but regardless, it was a great achievement with some impressive inswing bowling.  Read on for more details.

Our 2nd and 3rd Div sides are both rolling, in 2nd and 1st place after a very bright start to the season.  Well done to Raf and Dan and their teams so far this season.

And a big thank you to several of our Junior players who have answered the call over the last few weeks.  Finlay McFarland, Marlowe Dodd, Elias Richardson and Sasha Anandh have all played their first senior matches – with Fin starring with the ball 2 weeks ago – including a nice catch taken by his Dad, Andrew, also filling in.  Welcome back to Senior cricket Andrew!

Umpire Education

It was another great turn out for our Community Umpiring Accreditation course with Claire Polosak.  Thanks to our Senior Teams which sent players along – Claire’s sessions are always fantastic, and up to date, with an example of the Australia v New Zealand T20I she had umpired the night before – talk about current.

We will run this course again next season – I would strongly encourage all our Club players to get along next time – and all those who did attend to complete the exam, and get your Official Accreditation also.

Match Report: Dharmin Thakkar

Round 5:

SHCC Gold 5/145 Won

v SHCC Blue 9/144

Consistent rain throughout the week left our original venue unavailable, adding to the disappointment after our earlier game was forfeited by the opposition.

Fortunately, we secured a new venue just in time, giving us the chance to play against our own clubmates!

We lost the toss and were sent in to bowl first, ready to make the most of the opportunity.

We opened the bowling with Tej and Dharmin, but SHCC Blue’s openers got off to a solid start, putting together a 40-run partnership. Gourav broke through with our first wicket, before Prabhu produced a beauty to dismiss Luca, one of their most consistent batters and a key wicket for us.

Aman then stole the show, claiming a hat-trick on his way to an impressive 4/25. Jeet, making his bowling debut for the season, bowled beautifully taking two wickets, while Chetan chipped in with his season’s first wicket and another debut for this season - Vikas bowled really well keeping the pressure on our opponents. Together, we restricted SHCC Blue to 144 runs in 31 overs.

In reply, Hamza and Sameer gave us a solid start with a 48-run opening partnership before Sameer departed for 11. Jeet joined Hamza at the crease and the pair took control, putting together an outstanding 82-run partnership. Hamza unleashing a flurry of boundaries and coming agonisingly close to his century, falling just three runs short.

We then lost three quick wickets, but Abhishek and Chetan held their nerve to see us home without further damage and secure the win.

A strong bowling performance, some explosive batting and a composed finish made for a great day of cricket against our fellow clubmates!

Round 5: SHCC 7/44 Lost

v Panania East-Hills RSL  0/48

A Day to Forget – But Credit to Those Who Turned Up!

Round 5 was always going to be an uphill battle.

Our regular Sixth Grade side had been decimated by injuries and unavailability, leaving just four regular Sixth Graders available for selection.

After some frantic last-minute recruiting, we managed to scrape together a team of eight — including a few old blokes and one brave and talented young woman — determined to avoid a forfeit, fulfil our commitment and get through to the following round when, hopefully, the cavalry would arrive!

Facing a full complement of fit, enthusiastic young men from Panania East Hills, we knew we were on a hiding to nothing. Nevertheless, we turned up hoping to salvage something from the afternoon.

Batting – A Very Long Afternoon in a Very Short Innings

The first highlight of the day was winning the toss.

Unfortunately, that was pretty much where the highlights ended!

Electing to bat, we found ourselves up against a disciplined and energetic Panania bowling attack that gave us absolutely nothing.

Khurram Mahmood in his 250th match for Club, provided the only real resistance, top-scoring with 18, including a couple of boundaries. The rest of us struggled to get going, and wickets fell at an alarming rate.

We were eventually dismissed for just 44 runs — a total that will probably find its way into the club’s history books, although perhaps not the section we’d prefer!

Bowling – Not Much to Defend!

Defending 44 against a strong batting lineup was never going to be easy, particularly with a makeshift side and limited bowling resources.

Panania wasted little time chasing down the target, reaching 0/48 without losing a wicket.

An emphatic defeat, and one of those afternoons where the opposition was simply too strong for the side we were able to put on the park.

Credit Where It’s Due

While the result was disappointing, enormous thanks must go to the irregulars who answered the call and helped us avoid a forfeit.

Special thanks to Khurram, Shaun, Anthony and particularly Sasha making her Seniors debut for SHCC, who stepped up to play in circumstances that were hardly ideal.

Without their willingness to help out, we simply wouldn’t have had a team.

Sometimes just getting onto the field is an achievement in itself, and their contribution deserves recognition regardless of the scoreboard.

Looking Ahead – The Cavalry Is Coming!

If there is a silver lining to such a comprehensive defeat, it’s that it has served as a pretty significant wake-up call.

The regular Sixth Grade players have rallied, and we are now looking forward to fielding a full, more balanced and competitive side for our opening two-day match against Rangers, our opponents from Round 1.

There is plenty of cricket still to play, and hopefully this result marks the low point of our season rather than the beginning of a trend.

The challenge now is simple: get our regular team on the park, rediscover some competitive spirit and start enjoying our cricket again.

Onwards and upwards, Sixth Grade — surely there’s only one direction to go from here!

Round 5: SHCC 3/104 Won

v Summer Hill Suns 9/102

Hey Siri, play 'Jigsaw Falling Into Place' by Radiohead. Outside of being a fantastic track, it's also a perfect allegory for where your mighty 7's are at, following a dominant win in the local derby. Over the last two weeks I've been writing about how all the signs for the 7's are looking up, regardless of result, in this game we got to see each different element of the game done to a high level, all coming together in the one match to dominate an opposition.

The newly rebranded 'Suns' won the toss and chose to bat. They started cautiously, looking to leave or defend early but following an excellent opening spell from Mike Anderson, including an umpiring call that somehow, went to slip but was given not out (Uhh Stuart Broad, 2013 called... they want their decision back!) the batters changed tactics and went for the long handle. Berger in particular was a tricky customer, advancing down the wicket at the quicks, hitting across the line, his resistance was proving stubborn… we needed a different approach.

Fortunately, 'The Doctor' was in. PJ bowled beautifully in this game. I have no idea what happened, if physio he's been seeing gave him something a little 'extra' but PJ was bowling heat! Line, length, angles, swing it was all happening. When Berger tried to dance down and smack him into next week he made a critical misjudgment - Michael Metry behind the stumps. Quick as a flash he whipped off the bails and Berger was on his way.

Then Oscar Bryant joined PJ from the other end and - hey Siri, play ‘The Wedding March’ because the next five wickets were an absolute procession! The Suns went from 0/34 to 6/56 in 9 overs thanks to near perfect spells from PJ and Oscar. A new addition to the 7’s, Oscar has fitted in like chips and salsa. Consistently put the ball in good areas at nice pace and the fielders did the rest!

SHCC stun in the field
SHCC stun in the field

This is where our jigsaw really fell into place - in the field! I don’t think we put down a catch. Matt Abotomy again was white lightning on the turf, Adam Miles bowled with sheer heat and took a great catch. Benny ‘& Eggs’ Kimble not only took a belter of a catch, but bowled a guy with the perfect off spinners delivery, pitched outside off, spun back through the gate and took the top of off! Sensational stuff.

He maintains it was an arm ball the guy missed but I’ll let you be the judge. Two very nice wickets to your humble author including a sharp catch at slip to Kaustav, and a hilarious, leg side, ultra slow ball nicked to the keeper more or less tidied it up for the 7s. 103 to get.

It was a shaky start with the bat, Mike Metry put his hand up to open and his eyes lit up on a short one only to be caught in the deep. Kaustav had one that absolutely died off a spinner and caught him dead in front . At 2-5 we were in trouble. Hey Siri… play ‘I Need a Hero’ by Bonnie Tyler. Don Stewart was that hero, he played a beautiful Captains knock coming in at 3, for 47*. There was trademark Don shots, pulls, heaves through long on, but the work in the nets was showing through too! Some lovely, elbow high, classical drives, including an absolute beauty straight down the ground for four.

He was ably joined by Adam Miles 19, who deserves a particular shout out for an audacious ramp shot for four, and Mike Anderson 20* who has been a fantastic addition to the side and hit the winning runs in style.

Now the opposition are bottom of the table for a reason but even so this was a great game for the 7’s. All facets of the game came together, Don and Neil captained extremely well and we were relentless in our batting, bowling and fielding. We will face tougher tests, and soon, but this was a strong win the team can build upon going forward.
