Round 5: Summer 1/99 def Revesby Workers Club 97

Summer Hill 2nds played host to Revesby Workers in a top of the table clash at this early stage in the season. Few from amongst the Summer Hill team expected the one sided affair which was to unfold. Aayan Ameen, brandishing his Stuart Broad headband, wheeled off in 4 Stuart Broad celebrations as he ripped through the Revesby top order with unrivalled pace and movement, claiming all top four wickets in a devastating opening spell. Revesby recovered slightly before Jay Karim, the Mascot Murali, and Abdul Ahsan, the side’s leading wicket taker 5 games in, finished what Aayan started as the visitors were restricted to less than 100.

Revesby dismissed Arslan Ameen early, however Madushan and Josh counter attacked, keeping an impressive run-rate in the small chase. Madushan continued where he left off, following up his hundred from the week before with a brisk 48* off 39 balls. Even as Josh was dismissed, Waqar and Madushan quickly picked off the remaining 40 runs, with another unbeaten stand as Summer Hill 2nds climb to top of the table with a comprehensive win completed within 13 overs.

Round 4: Summer Hill 193 def Magpies 79

Up against the previously undefeated Magpies, 4th division got off to a strong start, getting to 70 having lost only one wicket. However, a fairly disastrous collapse quickly reduced us to 6-93, raising the spectre of posting a truly underwhelming score.

We need not have worried, though, with a counterattacking half-century from Connor and 40 from Andy helping add another 100 runs for the last four wickets, guiding us to a very competitive 193, before the last wicket fell in the final over.

Magpies started aggressively with the bat, scoring freely until a superb delivery from Imran , opening the bowling for the first time this year, removed one of their openers - and his off-stump.

If that opened the door for us, a double-wicket maiden in Andy's first over well and truly smashed it down, with his third scalp, plus two in two balls from Blake, reducing Magpies to 6-50.

Some late hitting aside, it was soon over, with a wicket to Matt and a run-out from Kunal sealing a commanding, 114-run win over the admittedly undermanned ladder-leaders.

Round 3: Summer Hill 123 def by Revesby Workers Club 176 & 5/75

After a disappointing loss, featuring a frustrating batting collapse a bit too common with this team, Summer Hill 5ths were looking to bounce back against Revesby. Out at Playford park, with as quick an outfield as you can find in Sydney, the batting weaknesses could prove instrumental on a ground where 230+ is par.

Losing the toss on a stinking hot day, we were asked to bowl.  We knew that our best chance to win was to get some big wickets early and really strangle them down to a small score. Opening bowler Asher Tarbox knew this from ball 1, and was nigh unplayable through the first session. With support from the other end from Luca, the two seamers took 3 poles for 40 runs in the opening session, and while bowling 14 of the 15 overs in hot and sunny conditions.

It was a great start, and after Sid took the 4th wicket after the break, the Revesby batsmen begun to get away, finishing the second session 4 for 120 odd. It wasn't to stay like this however, as straight after the break, Luca came back on and stuck twice. A couple of overs later and he had 6, and Revesby were down to their last legs. Intent on lasting the day out they eventually succumbed to Asher and Owen, for 176. Asher taking 2, and Luca with 6, but really based on the quality from Tarbox, it probably should've been the other way around. A quick innings from Phil Tarbox, away in week 2, gave us a little bonus and we ended the day 1/17 from 2.3 overs.

Day 2 rolled around, and we knew that a few good solid partnerships would get the job done. Good safe shots were well rewarded at Playford and we had the whole day. Of course, that wouldn't be the way this story goes. Losing 2 wickets inside the first 5 overs of the day brought Luca to the crease far earlier than he was hoping. A third soon followed and we were 4 for 40. A calm and steadying hand from Luca with support from wicket keeper Simon started to bring that total up promisingly until Simon tried to throw his hands at one outside off and nicked off. Things were getting a little dire but Luca had a couple of partners left and he begun to be the sole problem for Revesby, all until a lapse in concentration saw him let a yorker under his bat. Some spirited fight from Andrew on his 5ths batting debut was short lived and we ended up all our for a disappointing 124.

We went out into the field for the last hour and a half, and although taking 5 for 75 in that time was a good achievement, it was little consolation for a game that certainly got away.

Round 3: Summer Hill 7/191 def Redfern All Blacks 189 & 2/41

Playing against Redfern All Blacks, although we lost the toss, we got exactly what we wanted — to bowl first. Our bowlers started brilliantly, with Dharmin striking early to take two quick wickets and put the opposition under pressure. The opponents showed some resistance before Prabhu broke through with a smart LBW, ending their hopes of tiring us out.

After 25 overs, a moment of brilliance from Hamza, with a direct hit from mid-on, ended a threatening partnership. Soon after, Dharmin struck again, trapping their long-standing opener LBW for a well-made 64.

In his second spell, Chetan turned the momentum further in our favour with two quick wickets — one thanks to a superb catch by Loki at deep square leg, and another through a lightning-fast stumping by Tarun. After the 30th over, Aman was introduced into the attack and finished the innings in style, claiming the first hat-trick of the season.

Our target was 190 runs. Our chase began positively with a 30-run opening partnership, but a few quick wickets brought some tension. Muniraj, new at the crease, showed great determination and composure against sharp swing bowling and a very vocal opposition. Hamza, from the very first ball, displayed sheer class — striking boundaries and sixes all around the ground. Together, Hamza and Muniraj built a crucial 80-run partnership before both fell.

In the end, Tarun held his nerve and sealed the victory with a boundary.

Hamza finished with a magnificent 122 runs, leading us to a memorable win.

We forced the opponents to bat again in the remaining 40 minutes, keeping the pressure on. Aman continued his fiery form, striking twice in quick succession, with Gourav taking a beautiful catch to support him. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, we fell just one wicket short of claiming the bonus point — missing it by a single wicket.

Round 5: Summer Hill 6/188 def  Summer Hill Suns Gold 121

Saturday Lucky 7s at Fortress Lees.

The specialist Lees pitch sent balls skittering like water droplets on a hotplate. The surgical precision of the 7s bowling that truly dissected proceedings.

Summer Hill's 7th Division, thrust into batting despite losing the toss, found themselves constructed around the scaffolding of Dave Ward’s restorative 60. After early architectural collapses—Rob and Kaustav departing with just 33 on the board—Dave steadied proceedings with the calm of a man who'd remembered where he left his keys. Micah (33) and the evergreen Jim Bandas (42 not out) provided the cement, pushing the total to 188 across 35 overs on a strip so narrow it made conversation difficult.

Then came the prescription. Dr PJ —advocate for "swing is king"—began his spell by immediately rearranging the Suns’ furniture first ball, a habit he's cultivating like bonsai. But it was Jim B who truly channelled his inner actuary, crunching numbers in this economy while claiming three wickets for seven runs. His spell included dismissing opposition captain first ball, on a hat-trick, where mathematics meets malevolence.

The carnage was almost exclusively architectural—eight batsmen bowled, the stumps lighting up like a festive parade. The slip cordon stood redundant, contemplating career choices, while timber flew with theatrical abandon. K Brincat fought valiantly for 40, but soon the scaffolding collapsed entirely.

Daved Ritchil seized two wickets and a catch at mid-off (never in doubt), while PJ's 4-20 completed the clinical trial. The Suns Gold managed just 121 in 32 overs—67 runs short of bothering the scoreboard operator unduly.

Bandas now threatens Jacques Kallis territory, accumulating 1500 club runs on the side, while full time as a stumps demolition expert. The Summer Hill spirit remained intact; both teams elevated their performances while maintaining the fraternity. Medicine, it seems, works best when administered collectively.

Round 1: Summer Hill 49 & 2/39 defeated by vs Democracy Manifest 4/162

It was an unlucky start to the Summer Hill morning team as we fell to Democracy Manifest in a 2 day match at Moore Park. Captain Tushar lost the toss and we were sent into bat. Wickets fell quickly, with Joshua only making it into double figures. We were bowled out for a measly 49 after 33 overs. Democracy Manifest won first innings points after 14 overs, finishing the day on 1/78 with the only wicket going to Tushar with a catch to long off.

Day 2 saw 3 quick wickets fall to David BM bowling with Democracy manifest batting another 10 to finish with 4/162. They sent Summer Hill back in to bat, eager for an outright victory.

However, in what was a heroic stand we withstood the last 37 overs to deny an outright and hold our heads up high. Shanil and Adil had one mission - stay in. Shanil was controversially caught and bowled after 5 overs sending Prince in who lasted till the 14th over. From here Gaurav and Adil applied all the discipline in the world, no silly shots, no heroics, only blocks and leaving the ball to go to the keeper. We finished with 2/39 - lousy on paper but a great moral victory in our hearts.
