It’s always great to see our players tick off personal milestones during the season, and for batters and bowlers, their first Century and 5 fors are special. Congratulations to James Hoy and Hamza Malik on achieving their first last round. Well done boys, and we look forward to celebrating with you at our End of Season Presentation Night.
In honour of the First Ashes Test lasting just 2 days, I’d like to refer to our Final Round before Christmas as “Test Match Round” as all our teams have a 2 day match in the run up to Christmas. I’d like to remind all teams there is a limit of 60 overs per Innings, not 60 overs for 2 Innings – please use them wisely.
Thanks to all players who attended last weeks Umpiring Course with Claire Polosak – another night of great discussion and learning – every bit helps when we are umpiring our own matches.

Congratulations to Jim Bandas who becomes our first player to go past 250 wickets for Summer Hill. Jim has been a warrior for our 7th Div team for 126 matches, bowling 1,263 overs at an average of 14.72. Well done, and thank you Jim.
Lastly, we’ve had another past Summer Hill player re-join our club. Welcome back to Gordon Barlow, who also ticked over 1,000 career runs last match.

Round 7: Summer Hill 2/95 def Ashfield CC 94
After losing the toss and being ordered to field on a hot and windy day, 4ths were pleasantly surprised by a huge covering of dark clouds that came over the ground five minutes later - and even happier when we took three quick wickets to have ACC reeling before an early rain delay.
The quick storm provided only a brief respite though, with a second run-out for the innings and two wickets to Matt (2-20) keeping the brakes on through the middle overs, before Hera (2-10) and Tom (3-10) finished off the tail to bowl ACC out for just 94.
Pete and Amin started the run chase looking like they wanted to be done and dusted inside 10 overs, but both departed with the score on 27.
That was one of only two blips in an otherwise comfortable chase - the other coming when Dan was hit in the neck by a beamer. Thankfully, that only resulted in an earlier-than-usual drinks break, with he and Gordon (40* - his second unbeaten forty on the trot) putting on an unbeaten 68-run partnership to seal our third consecutive win and keep a hold of top spot on the ladder.

Round 7: Summer Hill 7/163d def Marrickville 133 & 4/59
After a disappointing washout that would’ve otherwise been easy points, 5th Div were looking to capitalise against bottom-of-the-ladder Marrickville. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, we were confident that we could roll them quickly and have a crack at their total, leaving the possibility of an outright win open for day two.
Asher (1/23) and Luca (2/27) got us off to an economical start as usual. With runs not flowing, their openers grew impatient: one swung wildly across the line to a length ball, only to be caught at midwicket by Lachie off Luca. Asher got in on the action not long after, rapping the other opener on the pads with a peach of a delivery. Owen (3/37), with his left-arm wrist-spin, came on first change and, within a few overs, picked up three wickets. Two well-directed wrong ’uns saw the end of batters three and four—one caught behind and the other caught and bowled. Number five then charged down the wicket, only to be beaten by the turn and stumped by the cat-like Simon. To add insult to injury (or perhaps injury to insult), the 14-year-old son of one of Marrickville’s players—called in just to make up numbers—was forced to retire hurt after copping a fierce bouncer from Asher on the finger. At 5/30, things were not looking good for Marrickville.
Some tidy bowling in the middle overs from Leo (0/3), Rayhan (0/5), and Lachie (1/3) further frustrated the batters, with the latter finding an outside edge for Owen to take at first slip (filling in for the absent Phil). A late 75-run partnership looked to threaten our hopes of an outright win, with every half-chance seeming to fall their way. Eventually, Luca struck again, the batter hitting the ball straight to Jud at gully. This brought the injured 14-year-old back to the crease, but he didn’t last long—after taking an innocuous back-of-a-length ball to the gut, he was forced from the field again, this time for good. Marrickville were all out for 133 with six overs left in the day.
As the wind and rain descended upon Beaman 2, Saikat and Pulok—who would both be away for day two—looked to score some quick runs and go down swinging, and that they did. Saikat blasted a quick-fire 20 before being caught. Pulok fell cheaply after being caught by our own Craig, who kindly offered to field for Marrickville’s now seven-man side after two of their players left early. Jud and Rayhan came in to see out the last couple of overs, but Rayhan was adjudged LBW on the final ball of the day. We were 3/37 at stumps on day one.
Day two arrived with a sense of cautious optimism. We knew we had the ability to chase down Marrickville’s meagre total, but given last season’s string of collapses—and a couple already this season—we were wary of repeating history. Fortunately, the boys delivered. Two solid partnerships, anchored by the ever-reliable Jud, restored some much-needed faith in our batting lineup. Continuing his decent run of form, Jud frustrated the opposition with his strong defence, teased them with dabs through the cordon, and wowed them with his off-side punches. After Luca nicked off, ending a 47-run stand, Phil came in and sealed the deal with a 51-run partnership, ensuring we reached the target before the end of session two. Phil retired not out on 24 to give others a hit, while Jud eventually went down swinging, caught at mid-off. After a well-fought innings (and surviving Owen’s umpiring), Jud finished with a match-winning 57.
With two sessions left, an outright win looked unlikely, but bonus points were still on the table. Looking to take advantage of the blustery conditions (and channel our inner 90s-era NZ team), Owen opened the bowling. Although unsuccessful, Sid at the other end got back into the swing of things—literally—after his trip to India, taking two wickets. Another LBW from Asher and an excellent direct hit from point by Lachie removed one of their openers, leaving Marrickville at 4/59 at the end of the day and securing us a valuable bonus point. It was a great all-round effort that wrapped up a well-deserved win.

Round 7: Summer Hill 3/183 def Earlwood CC 7/181
On a quick Lees Park outfield, with only one short burst of spitting rain to break things up, 7ths turned up against a foe we’ve beaten only once in more than a dozen clashes. With 35 overs each and smaller boundaries than Earlwood Oval, the stage was set for a tighter contest — and this time, we finished the job.
Earlwood won the toss and elected to bat. We didn’t mind bowling first — but losing the toss meant we were doing it regardless, so on we went.
Their big danger man, Angelo Kotsiras, the leading run-scorer in 7th Division, came out blazing. He smashed 46 of their first 57 runs before David R removed him with some sharp chin music — a huge early breakthrough that shifted the tone.
Moments later, PJ produced another key strike: he silenced their mouthiest player, Lekkas, trapping him plumb LBW for a duck with the last ball of his first over.
Then came one of the spells of the season.
Gil, brought on by PJ, made an instant impact:
First ball: edge just short of slip
Next ball: nicked and out
Followed by three dots
And then bowled him
Final figures: 2/9 off 3 overs — pure quality.
David R struck again soon after, and Jim chimed in with a wicket at a key moment, building even more pressure. By drinks, Earlwood were 5 down for 92 and in genuine trouble. But as often happens, they mounted a counterattack. Tragotsalos played an excellent hand, absorbing the collapse and pushing the innings back toward respectability. With support through the middle and later overs, they clawed their way to a very competitive 181.
A brilliant highlight in the middle overs: Gil bowled Angelo Panas — Earlwood’s second-ranked aggregate run-scorer — around his legs for a duck.
A massive moment.
Our chase began with an unusual look: Kaustav was sent in to open. With the season he’s had, it could have gone either way — tentatively cautious or explosively dominant.
It turned out to be the latter.
We began steadily:0/45 after 11 overs — calm, controlled, increasingly confident. 0/77 after 17 overs — acceleration underway.
Jimmy, risking marital harmony by almost missing his 90-year-old mother-in-law’s birthday, stepped up and played a brisk, important innings of 38. He eventually stood right in front of a straight one for an easy LBW — “Say hello to your MIL, Jim!” — but by then he’d done a superb job at the top.
At the other end, Kaustav began quietly, absorbed some controversy early on, and then started belting the ball to all parts of the ground. He carried the bat for a magnificent 80 (including 8 boundaries)* — the defining innings of the match.
He also took two catches behind the stumps, completing an exceptional all-round performance.
Dave contributed a calm and determined 22.
Micah entered and delivered a brilliant pinch-hitting cameo: 30 off very few, including a six caught by a fielder with his foot over the boundary — correctly ruled six and a critical moment in the chase.
There was even debate about whether Micah was almost mankaded by Ussia, or whether the bowler was simply putting on a show…
Our run rate progression told the story of a perfectly timed chase:4 → 5 → 6 → 8 RPO across the four 10-over blocks — beautifully staged and controlled.
Micah fell with 2 runs to win, leaving David R the honour of knocking off the final runs.
Victory with an over to spare.
Key Statistical Notes
Kaustav passed 1,500 career runs
This was our highest one-day chase in three years.
Our first win over Earlwood since Round 3, 2023.
Match Turning Points
Overs 11–20 with the ball
Gil’s double strike, David R’s wickets, and Jim’s pressure created a chokehold that stalled Earlwood’s innings after their hot start.
Batting acceleration pattern
4 → 5 → 6 → 8 RPO
A textbook template for chasing 180+.

Round 5: Summer Hill 8/293 def by Kingsgrove’s Finest 7/368
Morning Squad had another great moral victory in our match with Kingsgrove Finest. With Morning squad reaching our highest ever score, James Hoy scoring a century, a 100 partnership between James & Shanil and a hat-trick ball as well.
We lost the toss and were sent into bowl, but took an early wicket from a dangerous looking batsman with Joshua Mortimer taking his first caught behind as keeper off the bowling of David Bailey-Mckay. As the day progressed Kingsgrove Finest piled on the runs to end up with 368.
A moment of light when James took an amazing catch on the boundary, to the cheers of the passer-bys off David BM, followed by a LBW the next ball.
Our batting lineup is starting to take form, with our most impressive batting figures to date. Our openers Adil and Grant both scoring into their mid 30’s by the 10th over.
James Hoy's magnificent century, sent a red faced Kingsgrove Finest all over Moore Park. James thanked Kingsgrove Finest for the dropped catches and the wind keeping the bails off the stumps. With our first ever 290+ score, Morning Squad has received a much needed confidence boost.
