SHCC Scoop - Thunderbolts & Lightning, Claire Polosak & Umpiring…

You know summer is not far away when ominous clouds in the distance get even darker and the lightning starts cracking!
All of our teams with 2 day matches were fortunate to finish their matches – some results positive, some negative. Sadly, our Div 5 and Div 6 teams who had 1 day matches were not so lucky, with Div 5 on their way to a win against an undermanned Newtown, and Div 6 evenly poised against Summer Hill Seniors. Both matches ended in a draw. Read on for more details of our recent matches.

Umpire Training - Monday, November 24th
We are thrilled to welcome back International Umpire Claire Polosak to conduct a Community Umpiring Course. These have been very popular in the past, and we are expecting another great turn out. Claire is just back from Umpiring the Womens World Cup in India, and in England for their series against the West Indies – along with a MCC Rules Committee meeting. It will be a great evening of learning, and I’m sure some fabulous cricket stories as well.

Round 7: Summer Hill 182 def Panania East Hills RSL 114
4th division came out on top in a see-sawing tussle against Panania. After winning the toss and batting, Peter was the star at the top of the order, piling on a quickfire 76 when no one else in the top five reached 20.
Unfortunately, an all-too-familiar collapse in the middle threatened to undo much of that good work, reducing us from 1-74 to 7-133, but a stellar rearguard from Andy (41) helped guide us to a defendable 182.
Having been bowled out early, that gave us a crucial 10-over spell before the end of day one in cloudy conditions, and Tom (2-31) made the most of it, removing both openers to have Panania 2-21 at the close.
While they got off to a quick start on day two, and our job was made far trickier when Tom went down with a back injury, Imran (2-34) broke the game open with a crucial double-wicket maiden.
After that, it was another episode of the Andy show. Bowling nine overs straight, he took all the remaining six wickets, including the final one a mere 15 minutes or so before the heavens opened, to finish with a superb 6-38 and seal a strong win.

Round 5: Summer Hill 4/103 def St Chistopher’s 103
Fresh off their last ball heroics in the last round, Summer Hill travelled to Marco Fields to take on St Christophers. We hadn’t played this team for a couple of years, and it was great to chat pre-match about some of past encounters.
Quicky we remembered how devastating their batting can be, as St Christophers got away to a fast start. We were missing key bowlers today, with Lachie Schreuder and Andrew opening the bowling both unlucky not to pick up wickets in opening overs in blustery conditions. Luca Agius changed ends, and with the breeze now behind his back, got us back on track. Owen Gibson benefited bowling his left arm leggies into the breeze, picking up their other opener and dangerous number 3 with a badly directed slog – caught at cow corner.

As drinks approached, a batting and bowling nemesis came to the crease. Luke Stocks. Phil Tarbox was thrown the ball after a few tidy overs the week before, and Stocks was gone for a 2 ball duck – caught at deep Square Leg by Lachie Delaney, making his Senior debut for Summer Hill, having played his last match for the Club as a Junior some 25 years ago. Great to have you back Lachie!
Drinks were taken, and after a fast start, we had pegged them back to 4/75 at the half way mark.
The break did us well, with St Christopher's innings wrapped up for 101 – Rayhan Islam with 3/7 from 5 overs – and tight bowling from Lachie Delaney and David Isaacs – our 2 fill ins for the day - thanks to both of you. We now had a very manageable chase, which seemed improbable after 4 overs.
Opening bat Saikat was out early, but other opener Jud was solid for a well made 25. Luca made a swift 35, and was keen to get going to the Gasoline Pony in Marrickville for his bands gig. Dad Jud was his ride so he did the right thing and went down swinging.
Andrew almost got us over the line, but wanted his mate Simon to have the pleasure of hitting the winning runs in his 50th match for Summer Hill, Andrew falling with just 6 runs needed for victory. Simon did what he needed to do, and got us the win with plenty of time to spare.
All in all, a solid bowling and outstanding fielding performance. That’s 2 wins in a row for the first time in a while for this team – onwards and upwards.

Round 5: Summer Hill 6/89 def Panania East Hills RSL 9/88
With overcast skies and a strong breeze at the start, we expected to bowl first and take advantage of the conditions for some early wickets. We lost the toss, and were asked to bowl first – a great result.
We began brilliantly, with Dharmin striking in just the second over. On the other end, Loki — stepping in as our new opening bowler — maintained excellent pressure, swinging the ball away consistently.
A brief 30-run partnership followed before Aman made the breakthrough, and then Jeet Prabhu and Dharmin continued the momentum, wrapping up the opposition for just 88 runs. In the field, a major highlight was Shaik’s two crucial catches, solidifying his reputation as reliable hands in the field.
Our chase began confidently, with Hamza and Shaik putting together a strong partnership to push the scoreboard to 72 runs. A few quick wickets fell as the team pushed to finish early, but the solid start ensured we reached the target comfortably, sealing victory by 4 wickets.

Round 7: Summer Hill 4/213 (DLS) def St Christophers 220
Rain Gods Show Mercy as Summer Hill 7's Summon Lightning and Thunder
A two dayer at home. Jim "Bad Ass" Bandas continuing his form, claimed the first five wickets with precision, dismantling St Christopher's batting like a man possessed. Only Darren Day resisted, his 88 a monument to defiance in the rubble of the St Christopher’s batting. In the heat of the afternoon, St Christopher’s ground out 200, before PJ seized the new ball and broke the partnership, triggering the end. Ben Kimble showing how it's done with 2 catches in the field. All out 220 in the forty-eighth giving us a 60 over playground.

Four overs remained on Day One. Tom "Nepo Baby" Sanderson strode out and channelled Glenn Maxwell's demented genius—ten runs per over of late-afternoon carnage, setting Lees Park ablaze. 6ers raining down, and the racecourse and tennis centre figures taking cover. End day one, 181 behind, with no wickets lost. His father, Rob, playing the Pat Cummins role at the other end, 1*.
We'd need another 181 runs. Day two unfolded with grim inevitability as the clouds darkened. Rob batted on for 26 before being run out at the non-strikers end after repeated warnings in a career first. Kaustav saw off the new ball with Rob, and set the stage. Wardy compiled his third consecutive half-century. Micah Edwards, unbeaten on sixty-five, dismantled the St Christopher’s attack. At 4/213, seven runs short with wickets aplenty, victory was merely administrative.

Then the sky cracked open. Lightning fractured the heavens. Rain came sideways. The umpires abandoned their posts. We'd won on run rate —robbed of the satisfaction of striking the winning runs or pushing for bonus points, yet undeniably triumphant. The controlled brutality of our pursuit. All footnotes to meteorological intervention.
Victory tastes strange when stolen by thunder.
