Winter Cricket
While our Summer season is coming to an end, Cricket doesn’t end with two Cricket options during the off season.
We usually field sides in the very popular SMCA Winter Competition – a 35 over 1 day match played every 2nd weekend on either Saturday or Sunday.
There are also two Last Man Stands (LMS) Competitions to be held every Sunday from at either Flockhart Park in Croydon Park, or Hammondville Oval in Moorebank.
Start dates have not yet been advised - but get ready - it won't be far away.
Thanks for everyone who has expressed their interest. Please email president@shcc.net.au if you are interested in either competition.
Miss Celie's Player of the Week

Player of the Week sponsored by Miss Celie’s Jazz and Blues Bar in Ashfield. If you haven't been, get there and check it out. Owned by a former SHCC Junior Parent, Paul Blasi.
We have 2 winners this week - and it is hard to go past 2 outstanding performances in Division 4, who cemented their place at the top of the ladder with 2 outstanding performances. Read the match report for more details.

Round 15: Summer Hill 6/197 def Magpies 48
4th division finished off the regular season with a commanding 149-run win over Magpies, who had been in contention for second spot on the ladder heading into this round.
Pete and Amin got us off to a rapid start, putting on 79 for the first wicket in quick time. When the latter fell for a boundary-laden 37, Peter then combined with Gordon (26) for another half-century partnership.
It wasn't until the score reached 150, with about ten overs left to bat, that the second wicket fell, and Peter eventually brought up his century in the final over. Having faced the first ball of the innings, he was also at the striker's end for the last delivery, finishing unbeaten on 102.
A disciplined bowling effort made quick work of the chase.
Tom (2 for 4 off five overs) only conceded one scoring shot from his entire spell, and he and Hera (1 for 6 off four) made early inroads, before Robin chipped in with his first-ever wicket for the club.
From there, it was all Andy; he took five wickets to rout the tail and seal a comfortable win. Next stop: finals.

Round 13: Summer Hill 3/232 def Newtown 224
Second last game of the season before finals, and everything on the line for Summer Hill. Needing an outright win for a chance at finals, it was go big or go home.
Day 1
Summer Hill bowled first and things started well. Sporting a new Tuf Pitch Kookaburra, Asher Tarbox struck in the first over of the match drawing their opener into a false shot with a nicely taken catch at first slip.
After an even but wicketless 10 overs, Owen ‘Big and Bouncy’ Gibson struck to remove a highly uncomfortable batsman, and we thought we had them on the ropes when Sid struck a few overs later.
But then Raza Shah turned up and took us to town. After a few big swings and misses (and two drops), Shah put Summer Hill to the sword and hit 81 in what felt like 5 minutes. More time was spent wading through the nettles surrounding the field to retrieve the ball than playing the game.
Raza scored 74 runs in boundaries, 5 fours and 9 sixes, a proper white ball display. Eventually, he played one shot too many and Rayhan got his man, caught at cow by Phil Tarbox (who seems to have found his catching gloves).
Once the other opener was bowled by Asher for a well-made 54, Sid and Rayhan combined to slowly mop up the tail. Sid bowled especially well to finish with figures of 3/19 from 6.2 overs, and finished with two wickets in his last two balls!
A batting performance dominated by one knock, and Summer Hill feeling roughed up. Roughed up not because it was an unreachable score, but an outright win and with it a chance at finals now felt impossible.
To make matters worse, in the half an hour Summer Hill batted at the end of day one, Rayhan couldn’t keep a good ball out and Jud, after looking at his best, nicked off with five minutes to go. To protect our batters, in went bowler Lachie Schreuder to watch the night away. What a decision that would turn out to be.
Day 2
Touted as the next Dizzy Gillespie, night watchman Lachie and Phil combined for a 151-run stand, with Lachie scoring a huge career best of 47. He deserved a hundred by how well he was batting! Both bats picked gaps and found the boundary consistently in an admittedly under cooked bowling and fielding effort.

After notching his fourth century and career best score of 112, Phil retired within arm’s reach of the target, although not without some confusion from the fielding side. Luca, 37*, guided the team home comfortably, although not without his own retirement mix up.

The game ended in a bit of a heap with 5 no balls hurled down to fine leg, but either way victory was sealed for Summer Hill.
Despite the win, without an outright result, Summer Hill resigned themselves to the best possibility of a fifth place finish.

Round 13: Summer Hill 9/223d won 1st Innings vs Summer Hill Suns 107 & 6/110
A Defining Victory in Round 13
This two-day fixture was always going to be a season-defining encounter. With it being the penultimate round, our semi-final berth depended heavily on the outcome. The stakes were high, and the team knew exactly what was required.
Day 1 – Discipline with the Ball
After winning the toss, we elected to bowl first. With a strong afternoon breeze expected and potential rain forecast for the following week, the strategy was clear: take advantage of the conditions, dismiss the opposition cheaply, and give ourselves time to bat the same day.
The opening spell was tight but wicketless for the first eight overs. The breakthrough finally came when Dharmin struck, aided by a stunning catch from Jeet at first slip. That moment shifted the momentum firmly in our favour.
From there, the bowlers tightened their grip:
- Aman trapped a batsman lbw with precision.
- Jeet produced two lethal yorkers to clean up two batsmen.
- Vikas claimed two wickets, including a magical stumping by wicketkeeper Abishek
- Hamza continued the pressure with two vital wickets.
- Ratan and Gourav bowled economically, maintaining relentless control and keeping the batters under constant pressure.
The collective effort paid off as the opposition were restricted to a modest 107 — a testament to disciplined and aggressive bowling.
A Dominant Batting Response
Our reply began in commanding fashion. Aman and Umer laid the perfect platform with an 83 run opening partnership. Aman led the charge with a superb 58, while Umer contributed a steady 23.
With just 25 minutes remaining in the day and 56 runs still needed, a clear message was sent to accelerate. Aman responded emphatically, shifting gears with authority — striking 10 boundaries and 2 towering sixes. With Umer’s support, the duo brought us to 83 runs and only 24 runs away from the win before both were eventually dismissed.
Dharmin and Hamza then continued the assault, scoring at nearly 10 runs per over, winning the game on Day 1. We had achieved what we set out to do.
Day 2 – Relentless Pressure
We continued to bat and extended our lead. Ratan added late momentum with a classy 17. We declared with a commanding 116-run lead.
Pushing for an outright win, we wasted no time in asserting dominance.
Dharmin struck in the very first over, clean bowling the opener and setting the tone immediately.
The pressure never relented:
- Aman picked up two wickets.
- Ratan and Gourav chipped in with one each.
We claimed six wickets in total in the second innings – not quite enough for an outright win, but the team walked away with two crucial bonus points.
The Bigger Picture
While an outright win eluded us, this performance was more than enough. The victory secured the result we needed and officially sealed our place in the semi-finals — a reward for discipline, resilience, and collective effort.
A complete team performance at the perfect moment in the season.

Round 15: Summer Hill 8/111 def Summer Hill Suns 6/110
This was a game that evoked the classic 60’s WW2 show; it started as Hogan’s Heroes, descended into Dad’s Army before emerging as The Great Escape. It was almost like we turned up and went, ‘you know what would be a great tune up for finals? Just making this game as difficult as possible.’ and boy oh boy did we follow through on that!
It started in the world of Hogan's Heroes - we won the toss and elected to field, Bandas and Cullen opening the bowling and to our surprise no wickets fell during the opening spell, in fact it took a full 12 overs for a wicket to fall, fittingly to PJ ‘Carter’ Rosenberger, Hogans resident bombardier, dropped an absolute doozy to clean bowl their opening batter. Quickly followed by an inspired bit of captaincy from Rob (Hogan) who brought on his safe cracker, David ‘Newkirk’ Ward, with a cheeky two-wicket maiden to put Seniors in solitary.
A brief middle order resistance pulled the Seniors through lunch before more quick wickets to PJ and Micah ‘LeBeau’ Ricards put a dent in their hopes. However, we couldn't dislodge their left-handed opener, who batted like a competent Colonel Klink. He left well, put away the bad balls and for some reason we could catch a camp cold, let alone a leg glance off the guy! In the end, after 35 overs, they made 111 for 6.
Now, in the change of innings, the skipper pulled us together for a quick chat. His final (fatal) words were ‘Now fellas. The last thing we need here is a batting collapse alright?’ Cue the Dad's Army theme tune. It started (as all good farces do) with a calamitous run out, Rob smashed a lovely four, before a few balls later being called through for a single, when the ball was hit to their only compos mentis fielder, who smashed a direct hit. Now, direct hits in 7th grade are rare as hen's teeth; even rarer was the excellent sportsmanship from Rob who walked when given not out, to great appreciation from all.
Little did we know, the farce had only just begun! Dave Ward joined Kaustav at the crease and the two formed a solid partnership, before again K called Wardy through when the ball went to the very same fielder, for the very same result… a second top order run out and the 7’s are 2-46 after 14. It got worse. Mansini came on to bowl. Now look, Mansini is a great bloke, but he bowls slow and straight, it should be very easy to deal with right? Wrong. Turn up that theme music kids! He took 4-15 as we slumped from 2-46 to 7-61 inside 7 overs of absolute carnage. There were rank LBWs, trigger finger send-offs, and brain explosion shots up and down the ballot. It was a full-on utter capitulation, like the French at war outside of Napoleon.
Cue the Great Escape Theme tune. Now, the only good news was that Kaustav was still at the crease and he was joined by Ben ‘Welinski’ Kimble - Welinski was the tunneller in The Great Escape and, by George, that’s exactly what Ben did!
His 17 was essential to dig us out of trouble, and when he was dismissed, Michael ‘Segwick’ Metry came in at 7-88, still 23 to get and let me tell you as number 11 I was nervous! But Metry played to his namesake; he gave Kaustav ‘The Cooler King’ Gupta the tools to get us home, and smashed two beautiful (essential) fours in the process. It all came down to the second last over, 4 to get, one wicket in the sheds or more correctly, motorcycle under foot, two layers of German fences between Kaustav, the 7s and freedom in Switzerland (finals). Unlike Steve McQueen, though, Kaustav absolutely stuck the landing, smashing a beautiful straight drive for four to win the game with 8 balls in the match to spare and carry his bat for 44 not out! This image taken live on site on the day as he left the field.

The 7s emerged victorious, and thank our lucky stars we did! All the other results went against us, if it wasn't for this win we would be outside the 4! So, look, we did it the absolute hard way, but got there and now the next challenge for our great escapers, St. Christopher's over two days next week! Will we escape to freedom and liberty? Or be buried under our hopes and dreams in the freeze of winter? Tune in next week to find out!

Round 10: Summer Hill 4/222 def by Chatswood Gypsies 9/261
In our last match for the season we faced off against Chatswood Gypsies, us fighting for pride, Chatswood a spot in the top 4. Having only won the toss once this season, we continued our losing streak and were sent into bowl on a very hot Saturday.
Sachin took first poles with our bowling attack evenly taking wickets as the day progressed. Notable fielding exploits include Sachin taking 3 catches and Tom taking a lightning caught and bowled.
Our batting has steadily improved over the season. Chatswood’s confidence was shaken with Chetan, Robin and Tushar rapidly increasing our run rate towards the end of the day. Batting highlights include James once again raising the bat finishing off the season with a fine 66 runs. With Chetan just missing out at 47.
